What contractors optimise for

Electrofusion (EF) shines when the network is fitting-heavy, when trench space is tight, or when crews must prefabricate laterals and tees in a workshop and float them in. Butt fusion often wins on long straight runs of pipe where a tracked machine can work efficiently and joint count stays low.

In South Africa, you also optimise for power reality (stable gensets vs flaky site taps), theft risk for expensive machines, and whether your client expects datalogging exports for QA.

Electrofusion — strengths and watch-outs

Strengths:

  • Excellent for complex geometries and smaller spaces.
  • Traceability workflows are mature on many EF machines — helpful when utilities or developers want exportable joint records.
  • Training paths are well understood across experienced crews.

Watch-outs:

  • Cooling time is not negotiable — rushing this step is a common failure mode.
  • Barcode and scrape discipline matter; “almost clean” is not clean.
  • Consumables must match pipe OD and SDR; guessing invites dry welds.

Butt fusion — strengths and watch-outs

Strengths:

  • Lower joint count on long transmission-style runs can reduce cumulative risk when crews are skilled.
  • Can be very economical when laydown and alignment space is available.

Watch-outs:

  • Weather, dust, and ovality in the field can consume more time than estimators allow.
  • QA expectations still exist — do not assume “no barcode” means “no records”.

Crews often move between municipal reticulation, estates, and industrial loops in the same month. Each context changes acceptable bend geometry, thrust restraint, and testing documentation. Where a tender is ambiguous, verify with the project engineer before you lock a jointing method in the programme.
